My favorite memory is having a lesson on Joseph Smith and then going outside to play some of the games he played. I loved that when I was little!

We have only just started having FHE's in the last year or so.....so right now most of my memories are of me getting upset when no one is listening. But during one FHE on Prayer, we were singing a child's prayer, and out of no where my husband (who normally doesn't sing) joined in and we had a duet going. It was really sweet.

One service project we plan on doing is raking the leaves of a lady in our ward who is living alone.
November 15, 2009 8:07 AM
I just read it.....wow I still have tears in my eyes....it really makes me feel better when I hear that other peoples FHE's are not perfect.
November 15, 2009 1:17 PM
My favorite FHE memory is that of watching my kids play Simon Says with Dad. They get so excited and happy and wear my husband out. A promise of Simon Says usually helps us to make it through the lesson (barely). Sounds like a good book!

One of my favorite memories of FHE is that when we were little kids, we used to have a "talent" section of family night, usually right after the opening prayer and song. This gave each of us kids a chance to show off something silly like playing a simple piano song, dancing, or telling a joke. It was a great way to spotlight each other and build self-esteem and get out our "sillies" before the lesson!

Just read the excerpt... what a sweet story! FHEs are always an adventure.

One day last year, we went for a walk with my young family (DD6 and DS2, my husband and I), and we went on an "Imagination Vacation." We had a great time with our kids, telling stories and pretending we were going different places. We took lots of pictures and built a great foundation for spending time together.
November 15, 2009 2:25 PM
Just read the sweet story about FHE through the years, and challenges, and the song "Families Are Forever," which holds a special place in my heart. That's one of the songs we sang at my 3-month old daughter's funeral almost 9 years ago.

One of our ongoing family service projects is taking trash-clean up walks. We live right next to a pedestrian walkway that constantly needs trash picked up. We also try to clean up litter where ever we walk. We've noticed that the grounds outside the local elementary schools constantly have trash around them . . . and we know there just aren't resources to keep it clean, so we try to do a little bit every time we walk by. We're trying to keep in the habit of carrying gloves and trash bags with us whenever we go out. It's still a work in progress, but my 3-year old always has to throw away a piece of trash when he finds it now.

We have been struggling to get FHE going in our families... we really need to get together our two families for it to really work out. My favorite FHE was when we thought about how far the Gospel is spreading around the world. We used a giant map of the world and marked all the places where Temples are located. It was really fun and we all learned a lot.

I was very touched by the excerpt from Famous Family Home Evenings. I wish I would have known the gospel when my ex-husgand and I were married. I'm sure the support I could have given him through FHE and other teaching of the LDS church would have allowed us to mantain our relationship through the long deployment to Afganistan. Unfortunately we couldn't work it out.

My favorite family night is one we're repeating again tonight - you learn about the creation and then go outside to notice all of God's creations. Today we're going to the beach to talk about it.

Even though we joined the church when I was 9 year old, we didn't have family home evenings. As parents, though, both my sister and myself have tried to be faithful in having FHE every week. Although I don't have a memory that stands out, I do love it when my 6 year old plans the lessons. She really gets into it! Last night it was "A Happy Home" from the Friend magazine. Hubby had the activity, and we taught our 3 year old how to wheelbarrow race. Hysterical. A great way to end the day is with laughter, and FHE is a surefire way to do that.

My favorite memory is going out to Adam-Ondhi-Ahman with our 5 children. While there we had a picnic and lesson about the significance of Adam-Ohndi-Ahman, afterward we went for a little walk around the area where we saw the most glorious sunset. The spirit was so strong even my 3 year old felt something was special. Sometimes living near Church Hisstory sites have their perks! :)

I can't really think of a favorite memory, but some of the best FHE's with my own children are the simple ones where we read from the scriptures and sing primary songs.
November 17, 2009 8:03 AM
I love the excerpt! I've read it a couple of times now and each time it's more touching. What a great example.

My fav FHE memory was when we were playing 'blind man's bluff'. Dad always thought he was so funny when he'd put on mum's nightgown to confuse the person who was 'up'. But on this particular night he outdid himself and not only put on the nightgown but then climbed up on top of the file cabinet which is in full view of the big window by the front door. We were all laughing and having a good time with dad in the nightgown on top of the cabinet when all of a sudden there was a knock at the door. Dad had to answer the door in mum's nightgown and we all laughed as he tried to explain it. :)

Growing up, we didn't really have FHE very often because of us being a part member family. My most memorable FHE was when another family invited us over to join them for their FHE. I don't remember the lesson other than there were big paper cut outs of feet but I remember the love of that family opening up their home to us and showing us what FHE was truly about!
November 20, 2009 12:20 PM
I read the excerpt - it really reminded me that although having FHE isn't always easy, it's so worth it!

One of my favorite service projects is to make Christmas cards and mail them off to missionaries serving from our stake around the world. They love being thought of, especially during the holiday season, and we have fun doing it! We've also done the same thing for those serving in the military.
